The Burdette Law Firm
How to:
Sign Electronic Documents.

As we are now able to sling documents around the planet at the speed of light using our phones and computer, we will at some point be required to sign some of those documents with our hand written signatures. Next thing we may run into is that someone insists a document has a verified signature. On this page we've found some helpful videos to accomplish those things, plus update on how to get documents remotely notarized.

The basic choice to make about how to get your written signature inside your phone is: sign paper or sign glass. The next choice is what app to use to handle / manipulate your written signature file once it's inside your computer.

If you decide to sign the glass of your phone or tablet you probably want to buy or borrow an inductive stylus, or one of the digital pencils with inductive material on the tip. We know of very few phones or tablets anymore that are resistive, meaning they register the pressure of the material and not the type of material (like skin versus a ball point metal) touching the screen. If you can use a mouse or trackpad or your finger on a phone / tablet screen to input a signature that is acceptable to you on your desktop or laptop, congratulations. We have not seen many people who possess that skill.

If you decide to sign a piece of paper, the way you learned to do some years ago, you will then need a way to enter a picture of that section of paper into a computer. Almost everyone has the hardware to perform that trick now because smart cell phones have such very good cameras.

Using your signature in your device

This video covers many of the free apps available to process / insert your signature once you have it scanned into your phone.

If your most available means to scan in ink-on-paper to a digital form is your iMac, or your laptop, then here's a video which describes the process.

Notarizing your documents

For many documents you will need some proof that your signature on a digital document is really your signature. This is where digital notary enters. The process has become fairly simple - here's a video which describes it.

At the Burdette Law Firm we have qualified to notarize the documents we produce via remote means. In other words, when we craft your will, trust, divorce complaint, et cetera, we can send it to you via our secure client portal, and you can sign it, we can notarize it, and you never need to leave your house. It's a very fast, convenient and safe procedure.

In Tennessee you can search for online notary services on the Secretary of State Website.

Exchanging Documents

After we've had a video conference, we'll probably need to exchange documents at some point. The convenience of a video conference flys out the window if you need to run around to office supply stores to copy or scan documents. Fear not, you can do this stuff on your smart phone.

Document format

It's almost inevitable in our world with various kinds of computers and software that we will have documents in a different format than your computer can understand, or digest, or whatever it is that computers do. We use .pdf .doc and .docx formats because the courts, and most businesses seem to have standardized on those file types. If your machine does not have a .pdf reader, or a pdf editor, there are a number of alternatives that allow you to convert to basic text. If you want to complete forms, and send us the sorts of documents your computer / tablet / phone produces, that's fine. We can convert your info back into the format courts want to see.
